The Green Buffalo is a 28-minute documentary produced by Patagonia Films and directed by Joel Caldwell. The film spotlights the Lower Sioux Indian Community in Minnesota, which is pioneering the use of hempcrete—a sustainable building material made from hemp and lime—to address housing shortages and promote environmental stewardship. This initiative not only provides affordable, energy-efficient homes but also revitalizes the local economy through hemp cultivation and processing.

Central to the narrative is Danny Desjarlais, a member of the Lower Sioux Tribe and a former conventional builder. Initially skeptical, Desjarlais became a proponent of hempcrete after witnessing its benefits firsthand. He now leads construction efforts within the community, emphasizing the material's potential to create healthier living environments and reduce carbon footprints.

The film has received critical acclaim, earning the Best Documentary Short Film award at the 2025 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
