Hempcrete Mold Resistance — Chemistry & References
Hempcrete is mold-resistant by design when properly installed. The high-alkalinity lime matrix is hostile to mold germination, and the assembly buffers humidity instead of trapping it.
pH 12+ Lime Chemistry
Mold colonies typically require pH between 3 and 8 to germinate and thrive. Cured hemp-lime measures pH ~12 at the surface and within the matrix, which inhibits mold growth on the wall material itself.
Vapor Permeability vs Trapped Moisture
Spray foam and many synthetic insulations create vapor barriers that can trap incidental moisture against framing. Hempcrete is vapor-open: it absorbs, stores, and releases moisture in a controlled cycle that keeps interior RH in the 40–60% comfort band.
Caveat: installation matters
No wall system is immune to plumbing leaks or roof failures. Hempcrete's mold-resistance assumes correct detailing, breathable finishes, and standard moisture-management best practices.
