Mr Hemp House® Advances Healthier Homes with EPA Indoor AirPlus Gold

    September 2026 · 4 min read

Indoor air is where most Americans actually live. We spend the large majority of our time inside, and the air in a home is shaped by decisions made long before anyone moves in — how water is managed, how the house breathes, and what the house is made of. That is exactly the territory EPA Indoor airPLUS Gold covers, and it is why Mr Hemp House® has adopted it as a working reference for healthier construction.

    What Indoor airPLUS Gold Is

Indoor airPLUS is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program that layers indoor air quality construction specifications on top of ENERGY STAR certified home requirements. The construction specifications address moisture and water management, radon-resistant construction, pest management, HVAC and ventilation, combustion safety, and low-emission building materials. The Gold tier adds a more demanding set of requirements on top of that baseline.

To be clear about what this is not: the EPA does not endorse Mr Hemp House®, our products, or our services, and no project is automatically certified because we work within the program’s framework. Certification applies to individual homes and is confirmed through independent verification.

Why It Fits America’s Healthy Home Platform

Our whole premise is that a healthy home is built, not sprayed on afterward. Indoor airPLUS says the same thing in specification form: keep bulk water out, dry the assemblies that get wet, ventilate deliberately, control combustion sources, and choose materials that do not load the air with emissions.

Those principles map directly onto what we look for during healthy home assessments — drainage and grading, crawlspace and slab conditions, bath and kitchen exhaust, whole-house ventilation, radon risk, filtration, and the material history of the house.

    HomeHealthScan and Home Health Score

HomeHealthScan gathers what a homeowner can see and report. The Home Health Score ranks the findings so the most consequential issue is addressed first. Using Indoor airPLUS categories as the organizing structure keeps that guidance honest and consistent from house to house instead of drifting with whoever is looking.

New Construction, GaiaCrete, and Mini + Response

In new construction the Gold specifications influence sequencing as much as product choice: flashing details, drying paths, duct location, ventilation commissioning, and careful selection of low-emitting finishes and adhesives.

GaiaCrete, our hempcrete alternative, contributes a vapor-open, mineral-rich wall assembly that buffers moisture instead of trapping it, and it avoids the added chemistry typical of foam-based systems. It is one layer of a healthy assembly, not a substitute for the water management, ventilation, and verification the program requires. The same approach guides our Mini + Response housing platform, where repeatable designs let us standardize the details that most often go wrong on site.

    Where to Start

If you are building, ask your builder how they handle water management and ventilation before you discuss finishes. If you already own the home, begin with a professional assessment, and read our related note on becoming an ENERGY STAR partner or our guide to indoor air quality.
